The Bullard Banjo Has Now Been Restored!

The Bullard banjo has been in disrepair for approximately 135 years. There wasn't any money in our budget to restore the banjo, but thanks to donations from Tania Chandler, Drew Thurlow, and Suzanne McFarland, it has been authentically restored! The banjo was refurbished by banjo expert Jim Bollman, and can now be played for the first time in more than a century.

A song list was even found written on the back of the banjo dated 1877!

Learn more about the Bullard banjo on July 15th, when the Educational Programming Committee presents an educational event called "Ring the Banjar! : How the Banjo Became America's "Own" Musical Instrument." It will be presented by speaker and musical entertainer, Bob Webb.

Historical Pamphlets are now Available for Purchase from the BMFA

Ordinary Bullards have been involved one way or another in many if not most of the significant historical events of their times. Bullards have rarely been at the center of things, but they do well represent the involvement of ordinary persons.  Perhaps they exemplify the fundamental nature and significance of historical events and portray them more accurately than do the descriptions and analyses by prominent political figures, or as expressed through the limited understanding of a member of the social or religious elite, who wrote most of the histories.  My thesis is that a person who reads all of the pamphlets will gain a significantly better grasp of the causes and effects of some major events in our colonial history than they would otherwise have.  JMK
