Ken Gloss, the second generation proprietor of Brattle Book Shop, and frequent guest appraiser on PBS Antiques Road Show spoke at the Bullard Memorial Farm. There were over 40 guests in attendance, and all brought books for Ken to appraise.
Ken explained what exactly makes a book valuable, and also what will cause it to decrease in value- water stains, damaged pages or covers. A hand written personal signature from the author to someone of fame will often significantly increase the value of a book regardless of its condition. A book does not need to be interesting to read or an exciting topic to be of great value.
Ken had the full attention of the audience as he shared wonderful stories of his childhood adventures with his father seeking out old books and manuscripts. Ken answered questions and gave appraisals at the end of his talk.
